What is Clinical Hypnotherapy?

Solution Focused Clinical Hypnotherapy combines hypnosis (trance) with psychotherapy to look at what you would like to achieve, and focuses on the present and the future to achieve those worthwhile goals.  Clients are encouraged towards having a positive mind-set, taking control and focusing on how they want things to be.

Solution Focused Clinical Hypnotherapy is Suggestion Therapy and is a traditional treatment used to help with straightforward problems such as anxiety, panic attacks, weight control, pre-test nerves, stress etc.  It makes use of the mind’s heightened awareness and susceptibility to suggestions in order to make changes.  This modern method therapy helps with a large range of symptoms and focuses on helping you achieve what you want in life.  Solution Focused Hypnotherapy uses practical, modern and well researched strategies to help you make significant, positive changes in your life, in a relatively short period of time.

Hypnosis itself reduces anxiety and this is done very simply through relaxation and visualisation, allowing you to focus on the positive aspects of your lives that encourages a shift in perspective.  We all go into trance many times a day; whilst watching a film, reading a book, daydreaming, when driving..... we do it all the time and you do have control over trance.

By focusing on the solutions for the future, rather than analysing the past we:

– acknowledge where you are currently
– identify where you want to be
– help you to make the necessary changes.

I ask you to consider your preferred future, for instance, what would be better if the problem had improved?  What would have changed?  This enables your possible solutions to become more apparent and we work towards these.

What it is not!  Many people believe that Hypnotherapy, is being hypnotised to make their problems go away with a click of the thumb!  This is not so.  I also do not make you do anything you don’t want to do, and you are in control at all times, even when in trance.

How long does it take?  Everyone is an individual it is impossible to say how many sessions are required. I have seen people make huge changes in just a few sessions, others have preferred more.  If the problem you are seeking help with has been with you long term, it would be fair to suggest it may take at least 8 sessions and perhaps for some, the odd return for 'Top Ups.

Sessions are usually weekly however, this can be fortnightly or monthly as you feel is appropriate.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a collaborative process with you 'playing the game' and it is important to understand that change happens because you want it to.

How can SFH help me?

Solution Focused Clinical Hypnotherapy can help with a variety of conditions and is the only hypnotherapy that has research, alongside it.

Anxiety and Stress
Most people will be suffering from some form of anxiety and stress, especially during COVID.  Even if we're coping with the stresses of life and doing everything we need to be ( caring for a loved one, running a business, holding down a job, looking after family etc.,) these repeated stresses will have a cumulative effect on us.  Often the impact will be gradual; becoming easily irritated, never finding the time or inclination to do fun things, not wanting to drive on busy roads etc, constantly seeing the negative in everything in life, drinking too much, insomnia, comfort eating etc etc.  This can lead to more severe issues, never going out, repeated ill health, hyper vigilance, existing physical conditions being exacerbated.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy offers a gentle but powerful approach to solving the problem.  It focuses on the positive aspects of your life and stays away from fixating on the negative.  During the deeply relaxing sessions you develop the ability to control the anxiety and feel comfortable in all situations.  When you feel confident, calm and relaxed, and this will happen over time, you will have a new positive, and robust outlook.

The treatment is really an education, giving you the tools to build resilience to find your own solutions (one size doesn’t fit all!) and the ability to cope in the future when life becomes challenging.

Depression
1 in 4 of us will suffer from a mental health problem within a given year, with anxiety and depression being the most common combination of mental health disorders in the UK.  Between 8 and 12 percent of the population will struggle with depression and the effects on home, career, relationships and personal esteem are enormous.

Hypnotherapy can be a real and effective tool for helping with depression.  The Solution Focused approach engages the persons mind to use those natural and internal resources.  This empowering process, gives you the necessary confidence and control to start living you life just as you wish.

Insomnia
If you suffer from lack of sleep, find it difficult to fall asleep, or wake up in the middle of the night, you know that the consequences can be devastating.  Sleep has an important purpose and prolonged periods of sleeplessness can lead to irritability, weight gain, fatigue, anger and lack of motivation at work and at home, effecting those we live and work with. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help you empty your stress bucket which in turn helps you get to sleep and stay asleep right through the night.

Confidence and Self-esteem
Lack of confidence and low esteem can have a detrimental effect on our lives, whether it is associated with our relationships, at work, at home or when we are socialising.  Through hypnosis it’s possible to access the subconscious mind where negative beliefs, thoughts and behaviours can be revised and replaced. The result is a new and motivated attitude with increased self- belief and confidence.

Panic Attacks

Panic is a natural response to a stressful situation and it’s a feeling we all experience sometimes. However, just as there is a difference between feeling anxious and having a diagnosis of anxiety, there is a difference between panicking and suffering from panic attacks, or panic disorder. Panic attacks have sudden and intense physical symptoms. The typical attack lasts between five and 20 minutes, although they can go on for longer than this. They certainly feel longer.

People having panic attacks often experience some of the following sensations:

  • Racing heartbeat

  • Shakiness, or wobbly legs

  • Change in temperature (feeling suddenly hot or cold)

  • Starting to sweat

  • Feeling sick

  • Feeling faint, dizzy or lightheaded

  • Abdominal or chest pain

  • Feeling somehow disconnected from your own body

  • Struggling to breathe, sometimes described as a choking sensation

These sudden sensations often make the individual worry that they’re going to pass out, have a heart attack, or even die.

Panic attacks can be really frightening while you’re experiencing one, and you can be left feeling very shaken. However, please remember that a panic attack won’t cause you any physical harm. Although, if  you're suddenly having these attacks, it's best to have a chat with your GP.

Specific Phobias
Phobias can be debilitating for a person, no matter how irrational they seem. Fear of spiders, heights, needles, public speaking, flying (to name but a few) can normally be relieved within 4 weekly sessions.  More complex fears and phobias such as agoraphobia or claustrophobia take a little longer.  During the initial consultation we will explore the best treatment option for you.

Weight Management

What I work towards with my weight loss clients is confidence in body and mind, empowering you to make the changes you want to make, helping you maintain motivation, with a strong positive attitude.  It’s about being healthy and feeling happy with yourself in all areas of your life.

If you suffer from an eating disorder such as Anorexia, Bulimia or Binge Eating, then our needs are often more complex.

Most of us have tried a diet at some point; and many of us have had a go at several. Usually, we’ll find one that works for us, start to lose some weight, and be really pleased with how well it’s going. You may also be combining your new diet with exercise, and feeling much better. Then, those lost pounds start to sneak back on again.  Why does this happen? After all, we have a straightforward goal and a clear-cut way of reaching it with diet and exercise. The problem that most of us encounter is that we’re tackling the physical aspect of weight loss – but not looking at the psychological side as well.

Hypnotherapy combined with psychotherapy helps you reframe your relationship with food.  Having clear goals to envision your ideal outcome is an essential part of successful weight loss; and solution focused hypnotherapy can help you to achieve those wonderful goals.

I run small group classes for weight management as well as individual sessions via Zoom.

Chronic Pain

For those who suffer with chronic pain, we know that it's not just a physical condition but an emotional one, too and Solution Focused Clinical Hypnotherapy reduces those stress levels and allows us to focus on the good aspects of life, that we enjoy.   It increases our ability to cope with the discomfort that we may be experiencing because our brain produces its own natural feel good chemical, serotonin.  This assists in enhancing our mood and diminishes the pain message that our brain is receiving.  The therapy aims to increase serotonin levels in the blood and we do this by focusing on the positive areas within your life to encourages positive actions, positive activity and positive thinking.  It may sound simple but the results are extremely effective.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome
IBS is a common condition that affects the digestive system and causes symptoms like, stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhoea and / or constipation, lasting days, weeks or months. The symptoms of IBS tend to come and go and are unpredictable, often triggered during periods of stress or after eating certain foods and varies between individuals.  The cause of IBS in unclear but we do know that it can be aggravated by stress.  Clinical research suggest that Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help with IBS by reducing stress.

Interview / Meeting Preparation Or Better Job Productivity

Hypnotherapy can help you reach your full potential to achieve success, through visualisation and even mental rehearsal.  I can help you to achieve focus, improve your concentration, sleep better and help you to have a better mindset, to achieve your goals.

We all feel a bit of anxious and stressed with an interview or meeting, it can be healthy, it can motivate us, but when that stress spirals out of control, it can be devastating.  Symptoms of interview / meeting stress can cause us to overthink on things going wrong, focusing on your weakness, finding your mind goes blank when you enter the room or when asked a question, or physical systems from sweating and nausea to panic attacks.  Hypnotherapy can help to alleviate these symptoms and allow you to take your Job Interview / meeting or even better work performance, in your stride with confidence.

This is not an exhaustive list and if you would like to find out how I can help you, please make contact.
